Rhythm Doctor – Mister / Phuture was released on Truelove [TIR 1302] in 1990.

This is such an incredible record. I first heard this on the 808 State show and went straight down to Eastern Bloc the next day to get it. I fell in love with B1 ‘Phuture’ which is a lovingly crafted piece of art using elements from Phuture – We Are Phuture & Art of Noise – Moments In Love (Beaten) it really is a masterpiece and has remained in my top 3 records of all time.
I spoke to Chris about this release to find out how it came about and here’s what he said:
“It was just one of those lucky moments trying to find a house beat to go with Art Of Noise for live mixing.
I tried it out & it worked so well. The Dungeons on Lea Bridge Road was the testing ground. I played there many Fridays in 1988 & 1989 with Linden C Rob Acteson & Mr. C. Then I hooked up with John Rush (John Truelove) after he released You Got The Love and we went for it.
I’m pretty sure we used Cubase & a Casio FZ1. We sampled 5-6 loops of Phuture and I spun Art Of Noise in live. Same for the flip ‘Mister’ – you can here some slidy finger work on the SL1200 as Gregory Isaacs was hard to keep in time. The engineer, Jolly James (Colin James) really was ace and kept the thing together.
John Truelove tried to get an official release together with Seal singing but Art Of Noise said no – good or bad thing I don’t know? thanks for the interest Scott.”
Three tracks on the release:
·Track A is a mix of Gregory Isaacs – Mr Know It All with drum loops from a Dutch house 12″, an acid sample taken from Arthur Baker And The Backbeat Disciples - Silly Games and a programmed bassline.
·Track B1 is a mix of Phuture – We Are Phuture and The Art Of Noise – Moments In Love (Beaten).
·Track B2 is a mix of The MD Connection – The M Rules and Booker Newberry – Take A Piece Of Me.
The B side has a perfectly looped Acid locked groove sampled from No Smoke – Africa in the runout.
